Indian couture is enjoying a remarkable moment on the global stage, and the world's leading beauty brands are increasingly looking to India for creative inspiration.
Earlier this year, the international team at Huda Beauty Dubai invited Daniel Bauer and his Academy team to lead the makeup direction backstage for Gaurav Gupta's international couture presentation. The brief wasn't to create another predictable runway beauty look of smoky eyes and sleek centre-parted buns. Instead, they were challenged to develop a beauty story that felt entirely original—one that complemented the sculptural artistry and innovation of one of India's most celebrated couturiers.
Over six weeks, Daniel Bauer and his team explored concepts, tested techniques, and sourced specialist materials from Bangkok, Istanbul and Paris to bring that vision to life.
Together, they created three distinct beauty narratives, each reflecting a different chapter of Gaurav Gupta's collection.
Lunar opened the show with an ethereal, weightless aesthetic. Delicate crystal embellishments were individually applied to the eyelashes, creating a subtle shimmer that caught the light with every movement. Achieving this effect required extensive testing, with dozens of crystal sizes, placements and application techniques refined until the embellishments moved naturally with the lashes.
The collection then transitioned into Solar, where luminous, perfected skin became the focus. Daniel Bauer and his team developed a custom complexion technique by blending gloss into foundation and securing the finish with a fixing primer to create exceptional longevity. The result was a rich, velvety complexion with an inner radiance that appeared to glow from within. The look was completed using Huda Beauty's new Liquid Matte Mousse Lip Colour—a formula Daniel believes will become one of the defining bridal beauty trends of the season and one he has already begun incorporating into his work with Bollywood clients.
The finale brought Lunar and Solar together in Union, where the makeup became increasingly conceptual. Inspired by Gaurav Gupta's signature sculptural silhouettes, Daniel Bauer and his Academy team translated the language of couture onto the face through architectural contouring, dimensional textures and artistic detailing. The result was makeup that felt as structural and expressive as the garments themselves.
What made this project truly exceptional wasn't only the creative process—it was the collaboration. Gaurav Gupta directed the production like the conductor of an orchestra, with every backstage artist instinctively understanding their role in bringing the collection to life. The trust, precision and shared creative ambition behind the scenes made it one of the most rewarding runway productions Daniel Bauer and his Academy team have been privileged to be part of.
These are the kinds of experiences that define the Daniel Bauer Academy. Students don't simply learn makeup techniques—they gain insight into the creative thinking, innovation and backstage processes behind some of the world's most prestigious fashion productions, working alongside the Academy team at the highest levels of fashion and beauty.
